Today we left Pratt, KS where we said goodbye to our host Robert. Before leaving Pratt we stopped at the West Wash on the west side of town and washed the motorcycle and trailer of all the road dirt from the past couple of days.
Then we traveled to Greensburg, KS and had our breakfast at a great little place called the Green Bean Coffee Co. The coffee was great and the breakfast sandwiches were amazing. Lots of local folks hanging out having breakfast and chatting. Next we headed to one of the highlights of our trip west. Something that was on Jeff’s MUST SEE list. We went to Largest hand dug well which is 109 feet deep and 32 feet in diameter.
The well was built in 1887. After leaving the well we headed to Dodge City. On the way to Dodge City we passed several feed lots which Jeff found extremely interesting. Once we arrived in Dodge City we saw several huge companies that butcher the beef and pack it. We went to the visitors center and then went to Boot Hill Museum. We loved this place and arrive just in time to see the gun fight in town. We watched a video in the museum then went to the Boot Hill Cemetary and the Native American Museum. I learned something horrible today. I knew that our government was HORRIBL E to the American Indians and killed a lot of Buffalo but I didn’t realize the extreme we went to. In an effort to drive the American Indians away from the railroad and the land we wanted. The government ordered the killing of Buffalo. What I did not realized was when the killing started there were 5 million buffalo and when it ended they estimated only about 1000 buffalo were left. We toured the Replica Dodge City and were able to tour 3 original buildings. We had a drink at the Long Branch Saloon. After our drinks at the Saloon, We decided to get the heck out of Dodge and head for Colorado. We traveled on Route 54 and 400 into Colorado. We finally stopped in La Junta, Colorado and stopped at the KOA. We rented a Cabin for the night since the weather is treating huge thunderstorms.
We cooked our dinner and shared some with our cabin neighbor Kristi Renfroe Statrum. We did our laundry and sat by a fire. No storm yet…and am sure our luck can’t be that good. I am sure that we will see rain tomorrow. Total miles today 308.
